EPM participated in the third auction organized by the National Government, held on Thursday, October 26, for contracting of non-conventional renewable energies, and was awarded long-term contracts for 83 MW of solar energy produced by the Tepuy project, located in the Department of Caldas.

With this milestone, EPM consolidates its position as the leader in the energy market and continues to diversify its large-scale electricity generation portfolio with renewable resources such as water, wind, and now, solar energy. The current portfolio has 3,190 MW in operation, 88% of which produce power from conventional renewable resources (hydroelectric power plants), 1% from non conventional renewable sources (wind) and 11% from thermal energy (natural gas).

With the start-up of operations of the Tepuy project, EPM Group will increase its non-conventional renewable energy installed capacity five-fold, and will be able to produce enough power to supply the equivalent of 160,000 Colombian households.

EPM, a pioneer in clean energy

It should be highlighted that EPM has been a pioneer in clean technologies of this type, as it was the first to build a wind farm in the country, in Jepírachi with 19.5 MW in the department of La Guajira, which has been in operation since 2004. It was also the first organization to implement the first pilot program with floating solar technology.

In order to cover future demand in the medium and long term, in addition to covering market needs in terms of renewable energy projects, EPM has a project portfolio in several regions of the country, of different technologies, sizes and stages of maturity, contributing to energy complementarity.

The award to the Tepuy project is one more step for the business group within its energy transition program, which also contemplates other integral solutions customized to customer needs, such as mounting of solar panels for self generation facilities (4,000 kW for over 70 customers). Every day EPM offers more green energy to the country, contributing significantly to reducing the carbon footprint and to achieving the industry’s environmental commitments.

Solar and wind energy, and research in other renewable generation possibilities, has been a priority for EPM. Its approach is to continue starting up operations of projects that contribute to the protection of natural resources, the mitigation of environmental impacts, and to offering users access to new alternatives to supply clean and competitive energy, in the context of its higher purpose of contributing to a life in harmony for a better world.
