- The Minister of Mines and Energy, Andrés Camacho Morales, visited Hidroituango on Tuesday, September 5, and verified the progress of the mega-power plant.
- Construction progress at Hidroituango is at 92.03% as of August 31, 2009.
With the visit to Hidroituango by the Minister of Mines and Energy, Andrés Camacho Morales, the second generation unit of the hydroelectric power plant reached its maximum generation capacity on Tuesday, September 5.
"After completing the stabilization and optimization stage, in which power generation units 1 and 2 produced an average of 290 megawatts each, today we celebrate the fact that both units reached 300 megawatts of power. With this milestone, the Power Plant is now generating 600 megawatts", said Jorge Andrés Carrillo Cardoso, CEO of EPM.
Minister Camacho Morales toured the Hidroituango Power Plant and was able to verify the construction progress of the works, which is now past 92%. He also verified the operation and development of work on units 3 and 4.
"Hidroituango will be decisive in facing the effects of the El Niño phenomenon. Therefore, it is necessary to have all this plant’s units operating within the established times. From the Ministry, we are working to carry out whatever this Project requires to be successful," said Andrés Camacho Morales, Minister of Mines and Energy.
Hidroituango with Good Energy
Hidroituango continues its construction progress in its commitment towards the country's energy stability. At the moment, generation unit 3 is 93.1% complete and unit 4 is 84.3% complete.
Both the above ground and underground work fronts are advancing at full steam in their construction, constant monitoring, operation and maintenance. In addition to the civil works and electromechanical assembly of the entire turbine-generator set of the units that will soon start up operations, there are also underwater works.
In this way, Hidroituango continues its construction progress to close this year generating 1,200 MW of clean, renewable energy, which will contribute to Colombia's development.
Figures
Hidroituango's energy production, with its eight units, will represent a reduction in emissions of 4.4 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year. It will significantly contribute to Colombia's compliance with the commitments of the Paris Agreement, COP21.
Clean Energy for Colombians
As of December 2022, Hidroituango has been generating the first 600 megawatts (MW) of energy with its first two units. In total, with its eight units, the Power Plant will generate 2,400 megawatts of clean, renewable, low-cost energy. This energy is estimated to meet 17% of the country's energy demand.
