- The EPM forests serve as a habitat and refuge for 24 species of amphibians, 127 of birds and 27 of mammals, 17 of fish, 11 of reptiles and 631 species of flora in some state of threat. Its high contribution to biodiversity is evidenced in the 390 species of birds, 86 of mammals and 104 of herpetofauna reported in the Porce II, Porce III and Playas hydroelectric plants, which corresponds to 20%, 17% and 8% respectively of the fauna of these groups nationwide.
- Likewise, conservation strategies have been implemented for the species of gray marmoset (Saguinus leucopus), an endemic and endangered monkey species and a tropical otter (Lontra longicaudis), a bioindicator species that allows analyzing the contrast between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
