EPM thanked in particular the commitment of the national Government, Prysmian, the Federal Commission of energy - CFE-, from different companies in the national and international order, and especially to the workers of the enterprise, by working tirelessly to gain Guatape in record time
The CEO of EPM, Jorge Londoño De la Cuesta, informed the country that from today the Guatape hydroelectric begins operating back to 100 per cent of its capacity, 68 days before the estimated time to advance the repairs and works for the technical problems caused the fire in the tunnel for access to the House on February 15.
In a special event held at the facilities of the central, Londoño de la Cuesta expressed the satisfaction of the company by having served the country by putting the eight generating units which together give the plant a capacity of 560 MW in operation. "It was a strong commitment from EPM, and the company worked together to give you the good news that the Guatape hydroelectric returns to generate 100% of its installed capacity to Colombia today," he said.
During his speech, EPM CEO made it clear that the event of the Guatape plant does not affect the finances of EPM. He said that this public company, owned by the municipality of Medellin and the Antioquia, will continue generating resources to invest in the development of programs and projects that improve the lives of the people of the territories where it has presence.
He said costs that incurred by repair work carried out during the last few months, including the purchase and import of inputs, will be covered by insurance which the company for these cases.
One of the facts to make it through this situation was that as soon as they recorded the incident on February 15, insurance companies hired a rigorous research to find the causes that generated the fire. To verify that the event was presented by lack of maintenance in the hydroelectric power or poor condition of the equipment, the insurers confirmed coverage and the payment of the policy.
Londoño De la Cuesta said that a key factor of the process was the arrival in the country of 30 kilometers of cables, accessories and tools, with an approximate weight of 800 tons, which served to repair the section of cables damaged in the central.
From the first day the company moved to normalize the operation as soon as possible: "We started the search for cables, made diagnoses, analyze alternatives with suppliers, EPM servers moved to Mexico - where were available the cables - to advance the technical review, and execute a great logistical operation for the import of inputs", he said.
In this regard, he stressed that the realization and early delivery of the works was achieved thanks to the commitment of multiple actors in the national and international order, to ensure that the generation of the Guatape plant was a reality as soon as possible.
He referred to inter-agency national Government work, as well as to the effort made by Prysmian, European company that was instrumental in the execution of the repair work, and the support of the Federal Energy Commission (Mexico) to facilitate the supply of cables.
Also, the directors acknowledged the effort of the whole team of workers in EPM and the contractors who carried out their work day and night so that EPM to Colombia, met him at the time which expressed its appreciation to the Governments of Colombia and Mexico for their support, to the ministries of mines and energy and the foreign ministries of the two countries , to all domestic and foreign companies who accompanied EPM in this task and to relief agencies, the armed forces, the Governor of Antioquia and the mayoralties of Rionegro, Guarne, Marinilla, El Penol, Guatape and San Rafael, among others.
February 15 A technical problem started a fire in the access tunnel to the machine room on the Guatape hydroelectric plant, located east of Antioquia. There was partial destruction of cables that evacuate the energy of the plant, from the machine room to the substation.
February 16 the company evaluates and initiates the adaptation of plant to undertake the repair work.
March 17 the first eight spools of wire arrived to Guatape from Mexico to repair the damaged in the hydroelectric segment.
March 25 completes the logistical operation of import of inputs to restore the Guatape hydroelectric. Eight flights in two Antonov 124-100 cargo aircraft were needed to transport 57 reels of cables.
April 23 before the approximated amount, EPM put into operation 25% of the central hydroelectric. To that date, global repair in the central work were at 47%.
May 5 the plant begins to operate at 50% of its capacity.
June 16EPM put into operation the other two Guatape hydroelectric power generation units, to operate at 75% of its capacity.
June 25 the Guatape hydroelectric begins operating again at 100% of their capacity.
Guatape hydroelectric belongs to the use of the Nare River, regulated by the reservoir of El Peñol-Guatape. It is located at the site known as the spider, jurisdiction of the municipality of San Rafael, to the East of Antioquia.
