Sustainability is the fundamental purpose of EPM. To achieve it, the organization works to establish a mutually beneficial business-society relationship.

In 2010, we succeeded in strengthening an action model where corporate social responsibility regulates the use of resources, the relationship with stakeholders, and adds social value.

Environmental and Corporate Social Responsibility policies are the management tools that guarantee, for EPM and for the companies within its Group, that firm beliefs such as transparency, legality and responsibility are present in all decisions on growth and operations.

Special customer service and soft financing, over up to a ten-year period, in order to reconnect services to families who were suspended due to nonpayment. Beneficiaries in 2010: 117,390 finance arrangements.

The Habitable Homes Program focuses on the provision of basic public utilities – power, water, gas – to urbanized sectors within the coverage area, where connection difficulties are due to the scarcity of resources of its inhabitants and the marginalized legal and social situation in which they find themselves.

It is a program to eliminate access barriers for marginalized populations through soft finance arrangements over long terms, with minimum requirements, for the construction of internal and external networks.

As an additional benefit, it contributes to the reduction of water not accounted for in the water system, and of power system outages, which variables impact rates for the entire system.

This is a service offer that supplies electricity based on advance purchase of the kilowatts/hour that are going to be consumed, through pin code cards that start at $2,000. It is promoted through a social and educational program that guarantees the proper use of the service.

The advance purchase method is a better way of controlling consumption, a more efficient use of the service and a form of consumption and payment that families can match with the way in which they receive income.

Initially, the program was established as a pilot project to connect 35,000 families in five years, but objectives were achieved in only three years. Its standardization across the entire market is currently being prepared.

Access to credit at low interest rates, which is repayable against invoices for services, for the purchase of domestic appliances and supplies needed for remodeling homes, in order to facilitate improved quality of life and the efficient use of services.

What is EPM Youth?

It is a strategy that aims to bring together groups of young people, organized at a community level, in order to share knowledge about public utilities for the home within the context of environmental protection, value of what is public, and quality of life.

Who can benefit and how can they participate?

Groups of young people from the municipality of Medellín and the Aburrá Valley who are interested in forming part of the Program may participate.

What has it achieved?

In 2011, there were 42 educational workshops, benefiting a total of 12 groups of young people from the Metropolitan Area, with the support of COMFAMA [Caja de Compensación Familiar de Antioquia (Family Equalization Fund of Antioquia)]. Domestic public utilities, intelligent use, quality of life, and life plans were the topics covered.
